Description

In most car, motorbike and machinery workshops, the 1/2 in click wrench does the bulk of the tightening. If one of those wrenches drifts, every joint it touches is in doubt. The Snap-on QC3ETT250 torque tester gives the team a quick way to catch that drift. It reads 25 to 250 ft-lb, or 34 to 339 N·m, through a 1/2 in square drive.

Does 25-250 ft-lb cover your wrenches?

Snap-on rates the testing band of the QC ETT family from 10% to 100% of full range. So the QC3ETT250 suits wrenches whose working values sit between about 25 and 250 ft-lb. For example, a 1/2 in wrench that tightens wheel nuts, cylinder heads or engine mounts falls inside it. However, small 3/8 in wrenches set in in-lb belong on a smaller QC model, while 3/4 in wrenches need the QC4ETT600.

Shift-start verification with the Snap-on QC3ETT250 torque tester

After all, a two-minute check at the start of each shift costs far less than a recall. First, set the wrench to its usual value. Then pull it onto the tester three times in Peak mode, and note each reading. If the average falls outside your limit, pull the wrench from service and send it for adjustment. Also check counterclockwise wrenches the same way, because the tester reads in both directions.

Mounting for full-size wrenches

A 1/2 in wrench at 250 ft-lb puts a real load on the QC3ETT250. Therefore fix it firmly to a wall or bench that will not flex. The integral transducer and housing allow mounting in nearly any position. In addition, the raised neck keeps the display visible behind a long handle. So place it where the operator can pull smoothly at a right angle to the handle.

Faults the QC3ETT250 helps you find

  • Click wrenches that release early after months of storage at high settings.
  • Worn ratchet heads that slip under load.
  • Wrenches dropped on the floor and never rechecked.
  • Non-impacting nutrunners that drift, when you add a joint rate simulator.

Display, power and kit

On the Snap-on QC3ETT250 torque tester, the dual scale shows ft-lb and N·m, and you can choose Track or Peak mode. Meanwhile, rechargeable Ni-Cad batteries power the unit, and Snap-on includes a charger. The Snap-on brochure also lists a power adaptor cord, a socket adaptor and a PB1ETT plastic case in each box. Like any reference tool, the tester itself needs periodic recalibration to stay trustworthy.
