Description

A long click wrench works fine for a few bolts at 500 N·m. After fifty of them, though, accuracy slips as the operator tires. The Snap-on PTM590 pneumatic torque wrench handles that mid-size band with air instead of muscle. It is the second smallest model in the PTM line, with a 3/4 in drive and a 160-800 N·m range.

Snap-on PTM590 pneumatic torque wrench key figures

  • Square drive: 3/4 in.
  • Range: 118-590 ft-lb, or 160-800 N·m.
  • Accuracy: ±5%.
  • Non-impacting, low vibration, below 85 dB under load.
  • Supplied with case, cranked reaction fixture, tool hanger, secondary handle and male quick connect.

All figures come from the Snap-on Industrial catalog. Snap-on also includes a Certificate of Calibration and a torque vs. pressure chart with each PTM tool.

From click wrench to air tool

A manual setup for this range often means a click wrench plus a small gear multiplier. That combination works, yet each bolt takes many turns of the handle. With the PTM590, the twin motor runs the nut down quickly and then builds final torque in one smooth action. Also, the gearbox turns independently of the handle, so the reaction goes into the fixture rather than the wrist.

Where the PTM590 fits on the plant floor

  • Gearbox covers and motor mounts on conveyors.
  • Pump and compressor housings in utilities.
  • Generator set and engine frame bolts.
  • Medium flanges on cooling water and process lines.

In contrast, joints above 800 N·m need a larger PTM, such as the PTM740 or PTM1000.

Fixtures and extensions

The catalog groups the PTM590 with the PTM370 for reaction fixtures. So a plant that runs both sizes can share arms and plates. For recessed nuts, Snap-on offers 3/4 in drive bladed extensions in 6, 9 and 12 in lengths. Their slim blade slips into narrow gaps, while a clip holds the extension in place.

Setup in four steps

  • Fit the Snap-on PTMFRL filter/regulator, which the catalog lists as required.
  • Read the pressure for your target from the torque vs. pressure chart.
  • Set the gauge, then torque one test joint.
  • Run the pattern and keep both hands on the handles.

Note that the PTM590 does not suit breaking out tight fasteners. Snap-on rules that out, and it also calls for periodic recalibration.
