Description

When one device under test needs many coordinated stimuli, a single-channel source runs out of room. The Tektronix AWG5208 waveform generator plays back eight analog channels from one chassis. Lost in HCM lists it for rental and sale, and it quotes the configuration you request.

Eight channels in one instrument

Specification Value
Analog output channels 8
Maximum sample rate 5 GS/s; up to 10 GS/s with 2x interpolation
Nominal vertical resolution 16 bits with no markers active
Waveform memory 2 Gsamples per channel
Marker outputs 32 total; up to 4 per channel
Analog bandwidth 2 GHz (-3 dB), subject to output path and settings

Markers, resolution and interpolation

Markers can trigger or coordinate other instruments. However, each enabled marker lowers the available analog resolution, so you trade one against the other. Interpolation needs care too, because a 10 GS/s figure with 2x interpolation is not the same as a native waveform sample rate. Therefore read the datasheet before you compare it with another source.

Using the Tektronix AWG5208 waveform generator in practice

First, prepare each waveform with the sample clock, duration, amplitude and output mode. Then connect every analog output to the device under test through a suitable cable and termination. Next, route the response to an oscilloscope or analyzer. Add a marker to a compatible trigger input when you need to line up other gear. Finally, use attenuation or isolation that matches the circuit.

Which projects call for eight outputs

Receiver development often needs several stimuli at once, and so does multichannel electronics evaluation. Laboratory signal emulation fits the same pattern. A rental suits a development sprint that peaks for a few weeks, while a purchase suits a lab where the generator stays busy all year.

AWG5208 questions

Is the resolution always 16 bits?

No. It is nominal 16 bits with no markers active, so it drops as you enable markers.

What does 10 GS/s refer to?

It applies with 2x interpolation, while the maximum sample rate without it is 5 GS/s.

How much waveform memory does each channel have?

Each channel has 2 Gsamples, so each channel can hold long waveforms.
