Description

Theme parks and water parks open early, so ride crews often walk the trains and gondolas at dawn. Their checklists also include bolts on seats, restraints and wheel carriers. The Snap-on TER100L torque wrench gives those crews a clear signal at each value. Its dial reads foot-pounds and newton meters, and a lamp flashes when the bolt reaches the target.

Morning checks with the Snap-on TER100L torque wrench

Ride inspectors repeat the same rounds every day, and fatigue creeps in. So a lamp that flashes at the set value keeps each pull honest. In addition, a second inspector can watch for the flash and sign the sheet. That two-person routine therefore suits safety-critical joints on rides.

Ride joints worth a TER100L check

  • Seat frame and lap bar mounting bolts.
  • Road, guide and upstop wheel carrier bolts on coaster trains.
  • Gondola hanger and sweep arm bolts on flat rides.
  • Slide section flange bolts and stair frame bolts in water parks.

First of all, use the values in the ride maker’s manual. Also note that larger slewing and tower bolts may need a bigger tool or a hydraulic method.

The TER100L and the Precise 1% grade

Lost in HCM lists the TER100L under Combination US/Newton Meter Reading/Precise 1% Accuracy. Snap-on defines Precise as within 1% of reading from 20% of full scale to full scale. As a result, the band runs from about 20 ft-lb, or 28 N·m, to the top of the dial.

Care for the Snap-on TER100L torque wrench

In a park, spray, sun and sunscreen also reach every tool. So wipe the wrench after each round, and keep it in its PBR5 case in the workshop. Then test the lamp before the first check of the day. Never use the wrench to break a bolt loose, and book outside recalibration on a fixed cycle.
