Description
Hydropower stations on the Da, Lo and Sesan rivers open their units for planned overhauls. During that window, crews rebuild large turbine, guide bearing and coupling joints to the maker’s values. The Snap-on TEC2005 torque wrench gives them a 1-1/2-inch drive and a Basic dial that reads up to 2,000 ft-lb and 280 kg·m.

Turbine hall joints within its range
- Head cover and bottom ring bolts, where the drawing gives a torque value.
- Guide bearing housing and bracket bolts.
- Generator coupling and shaft flange bolts that use torque rather than stretch.
- Gate operator, crane and penstock valve frame bolts.
Large flange studs often call for hydraulic tensioning instead. So check the method in the OEM manual before you plan the job.
One needle on the TEC2005, two on the FU
Snap-on prints three versions on one catalog row: the Basic TEC2005, the follow-up TEC2005FU and the signal TEC2005L. This Basic model has a single needle that shows the torque achieved. Therefore the operator reads the dial during the pull, ideally with a second person calling the value. If your QA plan needs a held peak, ask about the FU version instead.
Sizes and parts of the Snap-on TEC2005 torque wrench
| Item | TEC2005 (CAT1500i p.335) |
|---|---|
| Square drive | 1-1/2 in |
| US scale / steps | 2,000 ft-lb / 50 ft-lb |
| Metric scale / steps | 280 kg·m / 5 kg·m |
| Length | 80 in (about 2,030 mm) |
| Width | 4-13/32 in |
| Head depth | 2-3/8 in |
| Handle | 93TQPA 5 ft tubular extension, packed separately |
All values come from the CAT1500i US/metric table. The metric side reads kilogram-force meters, and 280 kg·m is roughly 2,750 N·m.
Planning a two-person pull with the Snap-on TEC2005 torque wrench
At 80 inches plus the handle, this tool needs clear floor space and a stable stance. First, rig a work platform so the wrench sits level with the nut. Next, one fitter steadies the head while the other pulls slowly and evenly. Then stop the moment the needle reaches the target. Snap-on warns against using a Torqometer to break bolts loose, so keep a slugging wrench or multiplier for removal.
Range and grade of the TEC2005
Lost in HCM files this model under Combination US/Metric Reading/Standard 2% Accuracy. According to Snap-on’s torque brochure, that grade holds within 2% of reading from 20% of full scale upward. On the TEC2005, the band therefore starts near 400 ft-lb or 56 kg·m. Smaller cover and bracket bolts need a lighter dial. In addition, follow your plant’s interval for periodic recalibration, which Snap-on calls necessary.
Getting a quote for the TEC2005
Lost in HCM, our partner, supplies this wrench to power utilities, EPC contractors and overhaul teams. To plan your outage budget, request a quote from Lost in HCM. The listing names no calibration certificate, while Snap-on’s catalog states that certificate versions are available. Smaller sizes appear on our torque wrenches page, and snapon.com carries maker data. Planners with questions on reach or handle length can contact SMK Vietnam.
Overhaul FAQ
Can one person use the TEC2005?
On some joints, yes. However, its size makes a second person helpful for holding the head square on the nut.
Does it ship in a storage case?
Snap-on’s table shows no storage case for this row. Ask Lost in HCM how it packs the wrench and the handle.
How do the two scales compare in N·m?
The 2,000 ft-lb side equals about 2,710 N·m. Meanwhile, the 280 kg·m side reaches about 2,750 N·m.
