Description

Large inch tube nuts on hydraulic lines need a firm grip and many short strokes. The Snap-on RTWH88YSL flare nut head meets both needs at 1-3/8 in. Its slotted ring passes over the tube, seats on the nut and then ratchets back on the return. As a result, the Y torque body stays on the fitting from first turn to final click.

Snap-on’s CAT1500i prints no torque rating column for these ratchets. So Lost in HCM can check the limit for the RTWH88YSL when it quotes.

Inch, not metric: 34.93 mm

The 1-3/8 in opening equals 34.93 mm. A 35 mm nut is slightly larger, so the ring will not go on. A 34 mm nut, meanwhile, leaves almost a millimeter of play, and that can round its corners. Therefore, keep the RTWH88YSL for inch fittings only. For metric lines, Snap-on notes that metric sizes come on special order, and Lost in HCM can ask about one.

How the Snap-on RTWH88YSL flare nut head works on a line

Twelve points let the ring drop onto the nut every 30 degrees. Then the ratchet carries the nut forward on each pull and slips back on the return. That matters near valve blocks and manifolds, where the handle may swing only a short arc. Also, the slot lets the Snap-on RTWH88YSL flare nut head go on without opening the line.

Setting a Y wrench for the longer RTWH reach

At 1-3/8 in, CAT1500i lists the RTWH88YSL for the Y shank only, because the J column stops at 7/8 in. The nut sits 4.43 in from the locking pin, well past the 3.00 in of a solid Y ring. Thus the nut sees more torque than a click scale shows. The CTECH2Y100A, rated 5-100 ft-lb, stores a factor for head length. For a QD3IN200B or QC3P200, ask Lost in HCM how Snap-on wants the value set.

1-3/8 in ratchet questions

Can a J body drive a 1-3/8 in ratcheting flare head?

No. CAT1500i lists J ratchets only up to 7/8 in, so this size needs a Y body.

What sits either side of the RTWH88YSL in the range?

The RTWH80YSL at 1-1/4 in and the RTWH96YSL at 1-1/2 in, both on the Y shank.

Will it fit a 35 mm metric nut?

No. The ring measures 34.93 mm, just under 35 mm. For metric lines, ask Lost in HCM about a special order.
