Description

Very large hex nuts turn up on hydraulic cylinder glands, big pipe unions and heavy valve bodies. The Snap-on QZOM70ADP open end head is the largest metric open-end head in Snap-on’s CAT1500i table, at 70 mm. It mounts on a Z-shank body, so a team can put a measured value on a nut where a socket cannot drop over.

Size data for the QZOM70ADP

  • Opening: 70 mm, open end.
  • Shank: Z (0.990 in) with two locking pins.
  • Maximum recommended working torque: 480 ft-lb (about 651 N·m).
  • O.D.: 169 mm.
  • Head depth: 31 mm.
  • Pin-to-fastener distance: 5.75 in, as on every QZOM head.

A big jaw does not mean a big torque value

The QZOM70ADP carries the same 480 ft-lb limit as the 32 mm Z head. In other words, the jaw grows, but the rating does not. Some large nuts, such as cylinder glands, carry modest specs for their size, so the head can still suit them. However, structural bolts of this size may call for far higher values. In that case, use a tool rated for the job.

Space planning for the Snap-on QZOM70ADP open end head

At 169 mm across and 31 mm deep, this head is a large piece of steel. Therefore it needs a wide arc around the nut. Add the Z body, and the whole tool gets long, because the QD4IN800A measures 41-1/2 in. So walk the swing path before you start, and clear hoses and guards out of it.

The 65 mm alternative to the QZOM70ADP

One size down, the QZOM65ADP takes a 65 mm hex with the same 480 ft-lb rating. It measures 130 mm across and 26 mm deep. So check the nut with a large caliper first, because 65 and 70 mm look alike on a dirty part. Also note that Snap-on lists no Y or X open-end head at either size.

Body choice for the QZOM70ADP

In CAT1500i, the QD4IN800A is the Z dual-range body, at 129 to 572 ft-lb. Its table carries a note for dual-pin heads only. This head has dual pins, so it matches that note. However, set no more than 480 ft-lb, even though the body reads higher.

Care for a heavy QZOM70ADP

A drop can crack a jaw or damage the pins. So store the head on a low shelf or in a padded case. Also clean both pins and check them for wear, because the head relies on them to stay square in the body.
