Description
Not every torque job needs a ratchet. Sometimes you set the socket, pull once to the click, and move on. The Snap-on QYSD16A square drive head suits that style of work. It gives a Y-shank torque wrench a plain, fixed 1/2 in drive.

What the QYSD16A adds to a Y body
Snap-on notes that square drive heads let its torque bodies work with sockets, crowfoot wrenches and similar attachments. So one Y-shank body can switch from ring and open heads to a socket set in seconds.
- Square drive: 1/2 in, fixed.
- Shank: Y (0.560 in).
- Head outside diameter: 1 in.
- Head depth: 1-1/4 in.
- Fastener center to retaining pin: 3.00 in for Y heads.
Fixed or ratcheting: choosing a Snap-on QYSD16A square drive head
The fixed head has no pawl or gear to wear. It is also slim, at 1 in across, while Snap-on’s 1/2 in ratcheting heads measure 1-5/8 in. That smaller diameter helps when the socket sits beside a wall or a rib. On the other hand, the fixed head is deeper, at 1-1/4 in. In addition, you must lift and reset the wrench after each swing. If your bolts need many short strokes, the ratcheting QYD16A makes more sense.
QYSD16A bodies and torque limits
Any Y-shank body accepts the head. On SMK Vietnam, that includes the QD3IN200B dual-range wrench, the QC3P150 and QC3P200 preset wrenches, and the CTECH2Y100A ControlTech model. Snap-on’s fixed head table prints no working torque for this part. Therefore, ask Lost in HCM to confirm the limit, and check the rating of each socket and extension too.
Alternatives to the QYSD16A in the fixed range
Snap-on offers the 3/8 in QYSD12A for the same Y shank. For a J body, the fixed 1/2 in head is the QJSD16A, while X bodies use the QXSD16A.
Care for the QYSD16A drive square
A worn square lets a socket rock, which can skew the reading. So check the corners of the square for rounding now and then. Also wipe off grit before you fit the head. Finally, keep the body on Snap-on’s periodic recalibration cycle.
