Description

Crews that carry an X-shank wrench for big fittings often meet smaller 17 mm nuts on the same machine. The Snap-on QXOM17A open end head lets that X body (0.735 in) handle the 17 mm hex too. Snap-on rates the jaw at 103 ft-lb, about 140 N·m.

Snap-on QXOM17A open end head, 17 mm jaw for X shank torque wrenches

One rating, two Snap-on sources

CAT1500i lists the QXOM17A at 103 ft-lb. The UK torque brochure gives 1,235 in-lb, which converts to about 103 ft-lb as well. So the limit holds in both. Meanwhile, its retaining pin sits 4.50 in from the fastener center, the QXOM series spacing.

Is your 17 mm part a DIN or ISO M10?

A 17 mm hex is the DIN 934 and older JIS size for M10 nuts. By contrast, ISO 4032 gives M10 a 16 mm hex. So check which standard your machine follows before you order. Typical 17 mm work includes jam nuts on adjusters, brackets behind tubing and small hydraulic fitting nuts. In each case, the Snap-on QXOM17A open end head reaches the hex from the side.

The X body floor and the Snap-on QXOM17A open end head

CAT1500i shows two X-shank wrenches. The QD3IN350A starts at 59 ft-lb, and the QC4P300 preset starts at 60 ft-lb. Therefore, the QXOM17A on an X kit only works when a 17 mm spec falls between about 60 and 103 ft-lb. For lighter specs, the QJOM17A on a J body is the better tool. Also, the QYOM17A carries the same 103 ft-lb rating on the Y shank.

Clearance around a QXOM17A

CAT1500i and the UK brochure print different width and depth figures for this jaw. So we leave the outside size out. First, try a plain 17 mm spanner in the same spot to judge the room. Then ask Lost in HCM for the exact head size with your quote.

17 mm X-jaw questions

Why fit a 17 mm head to an X body at all?

It saves a second wrench. If your crew already uses an X body for larger heads, the QXOM17A adds 17 mm without new kit.

Is the QXOM17A stronger than the QYOM17A?

No. Both Snap-on sources give the X and Y heads the same 17 mm limit. Choose by the body you own.

Will a 16 mm ISO nut accept the QXOM17A?

No. ISO 4032 sizes M10 at 16 mm, so the 17 mm jaw would sit loose. Use a 16 mm J or Y head there.
