Description

A 5/8 in tube nut that has seen years of service often has soft, rounded corners. A 12-point ring can slip on it, while a 6-point ring pushes on the middle of each flat. The Snap-on QJRXS20A flare nut head brings that grip to a light J-shank wrench. So it suits repair work on small inch lines where the nut must survive one more cycle.

Size and clearance of the QJRXS20A

Opening 5/8 in, 6-point, slotted
Shank J (0.425 in)
Outside diameter 1-3/32 in
Head depth 7/16 in
Pin to fastener center 2.50 in (QJRXS series)

Snap-on’s US catalog, its UK brochure and the partner listing agree on these numbers. In practice, the head needs a little over 1/2 in of room from the nut center to a wall.

5/8 in or 16 mm?

A 5/8 in opening measures 15.88 mm, just under 16 mm. As a result, the QJRXS20A will not slide onto a true 16 mm nut. Likewise, a 16 mm head would sit loose on a 5/8 in nut. For metric lines, Snap-on lists the QJRXSM16A, a 16 mm 6-point J head, instead. Therefore measure the nut before you pick the part.

Snap-on QJRXS20A flare nut head against other 5/8 in options

  • QJRXS20A: solid 6-point, J. Best grip on worn or painted nuts.
  • QYRX20A: solid 12-point, Y, rated 79 ft-lb. Suits firmer specs.
  • RTWH40JSL: ratcheting 12-point, J. Fastest on clean nuts that need many turns.

So pick the 6-point head when the nut condition matters most. However, step to the Y head when the line spec runs high.

Light J bodies for small lines

Small tube nuts often carry modest values, so a small body reads more finely. For example, the QD2IN50A covers 10-50 N·m with no length math at the 2.50 in spacing. The QC1P300 preset covers 60-300 in-lb for one repeated value. Meanwhile, the CTECH1J240A ControlTech body reads 1-20 ft-lb on a screen. Snap-on sources print different maximum ratings for the QJRXS20A, so Lost in HCM confirms the limit with your quote.

Caring for the 6-point flats

Look along the six flats under good light, since a burr can mark a brass nut. Then wipe off brake fluid or oil before you store the head. Also keep the Snap-on QJRXS20A flare nut head in a fitted tray, so heavier tools cannot nick the slot.

QJRXS20A fit questions

Will the QJRXS20A fit a 16 mm nut?

No. Its 5/8 in opening is about 0.12 mm smaller, so it will not go on. Use the QJRXSM16A.

Why choose 6 points for a small line nut?

Six points load the middle of each flat, so worn corners carry less force.

Is a Y version of the 5/8 in 6-point head available?

Yes, the QYRXS20A. Snap-on sources print different ratings for it, so confirm the figure with Lost in HCM.
