Description

An 18 mm hex is less common than 17 or 19 mm, yet it still turns up on many machines. The Snap-on QJBOERM18A box end head covers it with a 12-point ratcheting ring on a J (0.425 in) shank. So a fitter can run the nut down and finish the pull without a tool change.

The Snap-on QJBOERM18A box end head in the catalog

Size 18 mm, 12-point, ratcheting
Shank J (0.425 in)
Head O.D. 34.5 mm
Head depth 12 mm
Center of fastener to retaining pin 2.50 in (QJBOER series)

All five values appear in the ratcheting box end table on page 340 of CAT1500i.

M12 hardware and the 18 mm ring

ISO 4032 sets the M12 hex nut at 18 mm across flats. Older DIN 934 hardware uses 19 mm for the same thread. As a result, a plant with machines from both eras may need both sizes on the bench. The Snap-on QJBOERM18A box end head takes the ISO parts, while the QJBOERM19A handles the DIN ones. So check a sample nut with a caliper before you order.

A Y-shank twin at 18 mm

Unlike the 17 and 19 mm rings, the 18 mm size also comes on a Y shank. Snap-on lists the QYBOERM18A on the same row, with 3.0 in from pin to fastener. So pick by the body you own. The QJBOERM18A suits J bodies, which Snap-on spaces at 2.50 in. Meanwhile, the Y version suits the heavier Y bodies.

Clearance for a 34.5 mm ring

Across the ring, the QJBOERM18A is 34.5 mm wide, with a 12 mm depth. That makes it 7.2 mm narrower than the 19 mm head, which helps between ribs and brackets. Also, a 12-point ring can catch the hex every 30 degrees, so it needs only a short swing. Then the ratchet lets you keep the ring on the nut between strokes.

J bodies for the Snap-on QJBOERM18A box end head

Page 339 lists several J-shank bodies. For example, the QC2I75 adjusts from 5 to 75 ft-lb, and the QD2IN100A covers 20 to 100 N·m. However, CAT1500i prints no working limit for this ratcheting head. So confirm the head rating with Lost in HCM before you set a body near its top. Snap-on also warns against using these tools to break fasteners loose.

Box end head FAQ: QJBOERM18A

Which thread size uses an 18 mm hex?

Under ISO 4032, the M12 nut measures 18 mm across flats. DIN 934 M12 parts use 19 mm, so measure first.

Does Snap-on print a torque limit for it?

Not in the CAT1500i ratcheting box end table. Ask Lost in HCM for the current rating before you plan a job near the body’s top.

Can a Y-shank wrench use it?

No. Choose the QYBOERM18A for Y bodies, since this head fits J bodies only.
