Description
Three-eighths drive is the everyday size on many assembly benches. Sockets for small and mid-size metric hardware are cheap, short and easy to find in it. The Snap-on IZFRAT9X12 ratchet insert brings that drive to a 9 x 12 mm IZO/ISO torque wrench. It slides into the rectangular receiver, so the wrench can run 3/8 in sockets with a ratchet action.

Snap-on IZFRAT9X12 ratchet insert at a glance
| Fitting | 9 x 12 mm IZO/ISO |
|---|---|
| Square drive | 3/8 in (10 mm) |
| Width | 38 mm |
| Max recommended working torque | 160 N·m (about 118 ft-lb) |
These figures come from the ISO/IZO ratchet head insert table on page 341 of Snap-on’s CAT1500i catalog. The ft-lb value is our own conversion.
1/4, 3/8 or 1/2 in on a small receiver
Snap-on offers three ratchet inserts for this fitting. First, the IZTRAT9X12 gives a 1/4 in drive and stops at 25 N·m. Next, the IZSRAT9X12 gives a 1/2 in drive at 160 N·m. Between them sits the Snap-on IZFRAT9X12 ratchet insert, with the same 160 N·m ceiling as the half-inch model. So pick it when your sockets are 3/8 in and your joints run past the reach of the quarter-inch insert.
Wrench range versus insert rating
On page 328, Snap-on lists two ControlTech bodies with a 9 x 12 mm IZO/ISO receiver. The CTECHAN30A spans 1.50 to 30.00 N·m, while the CTECHAN135A spans 6.8 to 135.0 N·m. In both cases, the wrench tops out below the insert’s 160 N·m. So the body sets your working limit, not the IZFRAT9X12. On the small CTECHAN30A, however, the 1/4 in insert may suit light screws better. Also, ControlTech bodies hold a built-in calibration factor for different head lengths, so enter the head data before you start.
Line work that suits the IZFRAT9X12
Picture a station that builds pump housings or motor covers. Most bolts take a 3/8 in socket, but a bracket or hose blocks a full swing. With the ratchet insert, the operator spins each bolt down in short strokes. Then the final pull ends at the set value on the same wrench. Because one body holds the setting, the torque record stays tied to one serial number. In addition, that body can take an open-end or ring insert later in the shift.
Care and limits for the Snap-on IZFRAT9X12 ratchet insert
Snap-on’s table tells users not to exceed rated capacity or break fasteners loose with these inserts. It also notes that periodic recalibration keeps the wrench accurate. Between shifts, wipe the shank and the receiver so grit cannot stop the lock from seating. Then check that the direction lever moves cleanly. If the ratchet skips under load, take the insert out of use.
Price and supply of the IZFRAT9X12
Lost in HCM supplies this insert and gives every quote; SMK Vietnam only lists it. Tell them your wrench model and receiver size so they can confirm the fit. Next, request an IZFRAT9X12 quote from Lost in HCM. Other IZO inserts sit under torque wrench heads and adaptors, and you can always contact SMK Vietnam.
Questions on the IZFRAT9X12
Can I run 1/2 in sockets on it?
Not directly. Snap-on makes the IZSRAT9X12 for a 1/2 in drive on the same fitting, so that is the cleaner choice.
Does a large-fitting wrench accept this insert?
No. It has a 9 x 12 mm shank. For 14 x 18 mm bodies, Snap-on lists the IZSRAT14X18 and IZLRAT14X18 instead.
What width does Snap-on give the IZFRAT9X12?
Snap-on lists a 38 mm width. That matches the IZSRAT9X12 and runs 1 mm wider than the IZTRAT9X12.
