Description
An 18 mm hex is a common sight on metric machinery, since ISO M12 bolts and nuts use it. The Snap-on IZ18OE9X12 torque insert brings that size to the small 9 x 12 mm IZO family. As a result, a light interchangeable wrench can handle 18 mm work without a heavier 14 x 18 body.

Same nut, two fittings
Snap-on makes an 18 mm OE insert for both receiver sizes. This one, the IZ18OE9X12, plugs into 9 x 12 mm wrenches. Its twin, the IZ18OE14X18, needs a 14 x 18 mm receiver instead. So choose by the wrench you own, not by the nut. Also note that the table lists no 18 mm insert ring in either fitting. For a closed 18 mm head on an IZO wrench, you would need a different tool.
Which 9 x 12 wrench pairs best with the Snap-on IZ18OE9X12 torque insert?
Three ControlTech models on SMK Vietnam take this insert:
- CTECHAN135A: 6.8 to 135 N·m, the usual match for M12 work.
- CTECHAN30A: 1.5 to 30 N·m, for light specs only.
- CTECHANM30: also 1.5 to 30 N·m.
Snap-on prints no separate rating for the insert itself. In practice, then, the wrench range sets your limit. If an 18 mm joint calls for more than 135 N·m, move to a 14 x 18 wrench and the IZ18OE14X18. Before each job, also set the ControlTech head-length factor for this insert.
Where 18 mm sits in the 9 x 12 OE range
The 9 x 12 OE inserts run from 7 to 19 mm, with no 12 mm size. Next to the IZ18OE9X12, the IZ17OE9X12 covers 17 mm and the IZ19OE9X12 covers 19 mm. That matters, because DIN M12 hardware often uses 19 mm rather than 18 mm. Therefore, measure across the flats on the actual parts before you order.
Care for the IZ18OE9X12
Keep the fitting of the Snap-on IZ18OE9X12 torque insert clean and dry, so it sits square in the receiver. Then check the jaw faces for burrs after heavy use. In addition, never use the insert to free a seized nut, and keep the wrench on its recalibration schedule.
