Description

Low-power electronics reward a tool that sources and measures in one box. The Rohde & Schwarz NGU411 SMU does exactly that, with a single channel, 20 W of output and four-quadrant operation. It suits benches where a larger supply would be overkill.

Reading the 20 W envelope

Voltage runs from -20 V to +20 V. Up to ±2 A is available at 10 V or below, and up to ±1 A above 10 V. So the output never passes 20 W, and the corner points of the range are easy to check on paper.

Because the unit sinks as well as sources, it can absorb energy from a device. Confirm polarity and the quadrant limit first, then connect the device under test with the output off.

Logging and control

FastLog captures up to 500 ksample/s. That speed helps when a sensor node wakes, transmits and sleeps in a few milliseconds. You can also pick voltage priority or current priority, depending on how the device behaves.

Remote sensing keeps the voltage right at the device pins. USB and LAN connect the unit to a computer. In addition, battery simulation and the digital voltmeter come as options, so request them if the plan calls for either.

Bench tasks for the NGU411

  • Sweep a diode or small transistor and plot its curve.
  • Drive a sensor through its whole supply window.
  • Mimic a small battery with the battery option.
  • Measure standby draw on a low-power board.

Such jobs rarely need more than a couple of amps. As a result, the 20 W class is often enough, and it keeps the setup simple.

NGU411 or NGU401?

Both models share the same voltage window. The NGU401 offers 60 W and up to ±8 A at lower voltage. The NGU411 stops at 20 W. Therefore, pick the NGU401 if your device pulls several amps, and stay with the NGU411 for lighter loads.

Lost in HCM lists the NGU411 for rental and for sale, and it arranges service on request. Give order number 3639.3763.04 when you ask, so the right model reaches your desk.

Rohde & Schwarz NGU411 SMU questions

What if my device needs more than 2 A?

Look at the NGU401, which offers up to ±8 A at 6 V or below. Otherwise, ask Lost in HCM for another instrument.

Can it absorb current as well as supply it?

Yes. It works in four quadrants, so it can source or sink within its power limit.

How do I link it to a computer?

Use USB or LAN. Then plan the commands, logging rate and file format before the test.
