The Rohde & Schwarz NGL202 supply, short for the NGL202 two-channel power supply, uses linear regulation and gives you two independent channels of 0 V to 20 V. Two rails, each with its own limit
Each channel tops out at 60 W, and the instrument as a whole delivers up to 120 W. Then the current limit changes with voltage. A channel gives up to 6 A at 6 V or below, and up to 3 A above 6 V. So 20 V at 3 A uses exactly the 60 W limit, while 6 V at 6 A uses 36 W. Therefore multiply voltage by current for your load, and leave margin for startup surges.
Why linear regulation suits delicate designs
Linear supplies generally leave less output ripple than switching designs. That helps when you power analog front ends, sensors or radio modules. In addition, the NGL202 offers standard data logging, remote sensing, USB and LAN. Therefore one unit can feed a device, record its current and report to a computer.
Using the NGL202 as a sink
Two-quadrant operation lets a channel absorb current as well as supply it. This helps in battery-oriented tests, because energy flows both ways. However, sink limits apply, so check the operating manual before you connect an external source.
Connection basics
- First, run the force leads to the supply input of the device under test.
- Then run separate sense leads to the sense points on the board.
- Also disable the output before you change any connection.
- Finally, use leads rated for the voltage, current and fault conditions.
