Description
Low voltage does not mean low stress. The Keysight RP7941A power system is a 5 kW regenerative DC unit that tops out at 20 V but handles ±400 A. That combination suits tests where current, not voltage, drives the design. Besides, it runs from three-phase 400/480 VAC. Lost in HCM lists it for rental and sale, with service on request.

Where the current rating bites
| Maximum voltage | 20 V |
|---|---|
| Source and sink current | ±400 A |
| Rated power | 5 kW |
| AC input | Three-phase 400/480 VAC |
| Mode | Two-quadrant source and regenerative load |
The two limits never apply together. For example, at 12.5 V, 400 A equals exactly 5 kW. Above 12.5 V, the power rating holds the current below 400 A. In contrast, 20 V at 400 A would reach 8 kW, so the system cannot deliver it.
Cables, contacts and fixtures at high current
At several hundred amps, every joint matters. So size the DC cables for the full current, and check polarity before you energize anything. Remote sensing, interlocks and a protected fixture then keep the test safe. Therefore treat the fixture as part of the instrument, not an afterthought.
Typical jobs for the Keysight RP7941A power system
- Low-voltage DC converters that carry heavy current.
- Battery and energy storage development, with chemistry, precharge and fault current reviewed first.
- Bidirectional converters and industrial power modules.
- Endurance runs, because regeneration cuts the heat in the lab.
Because the unit is regenerative, absorbed energy flows back to the facility supply. However, the site must allow that flow, and qualified staff should approve the installation. They should also set the isolation, discharge and emergency-stop procedures.
Rent or buy this regenerative system
Rental suits a validation campaign, a demonstration or a temporary capacity increase. However, ownership suits a lab that runs high-current tests every week. Keysight RP7941A power system questions
Can it hold 20 V and 400 A together?
No. That point would need 8 kW, and the system is rated 5 kW. Respect the power envelope at every operating point.
Does the system need special site approval?
Yes. Confirm the facility electrical approval, protective earth, AC protection and regeneration capability with qualified staff before installation.
Does it include battery-emulation software?
Only items named in the quote are included. Confirm any battery-emulation software, cables and fixtures separately.
