Description

Burning off test energy as heat costs you twice: once to make it, and again to cool it away. A Keysight RP5916A regenerative supply avoids part of that bill. It feeds power into a device, then returns what the device gives back to the facility grid.

Numbers to check before you book

  • One output, up to 800 V.
  • Source or sink current up to ±8 A.
  • Source or sink power up to ±2,000 W.
  • USB, LAN, CAN and digital I/O fitted, with GPIB and analog or RS-232 as options.

Note that 800 V at 8 A would be far above 2 kW. So the power limit decides what you can run, and the two maximums never apply together.

How the supply behaves on the rig

It runs in two quadrants, which means it acts as a programmable DC source and as a regenerative load. Output autoranging, arbitrary waveforms and digitized measurements also support dynamic power tests. In addition, protection covers overvoltage, overcurrent, overpower, overtemperature and grid faults.

Regeneration also lowers cooling demand, because less energy turns into heat in the room. That helps in a crowded test rack, so airflow stays manageable.

Rigs that use a Keysight RP5916A regenerative supply

  • Battery simulation, cycling and energy-storage validation.
  • Bidirectional converters and DC-DC power devices.
  • Automated aerospace, automotive and industrial qualification racks.
  • Dense development and production test with energy recovery.

In a production cell, for example, one unit can cycle a battery module all shift while the grid takes back the discharge energy.

Checks before the first regenerative run

First, walk the electrical path. Confirm the facility supply, the protective earth and the disconnects. Then check cable or busbar ratings, the protection on the device under test, and your approved procedure for returning energy. Skip none of these, because regeneration pushes power backward into the building.

The delivered configuration varies by unit, so also check the model suffix, firmware, options and connector condition. Lost in HCM can turn your test into a checklist so offers compare fairly.

Rent, buy or arrange service

Lost in HCM also lists this model for rental and for sale, and it arranges service on request. SMK Vietnam, however, only lists it. To begin, request a quote from Lost in HCM. You can also view other power supplies or contact SMK Vietnam. Official data sits on the Keysight site.

Keysight RP5916A regenerative supply questions

Does it only supply power?

No. It also sinks power as a regenerative load, so it can absorb energy from a battery or converter.

Which interfaces does it have?

USB, LAN, CAN and digital I/O. GPIB and analog or RS-232 are optional.

What details help Lost in HCM quote this model?

Send your voltage, current and power needs, the interfaces, the cable plan, the dates and the delivery city.
