Description
Small circuits deserve a small supply. The Keysight E3640A power supply is a compact bench unit with a single output and two ranges: 8 V at 3 A or 20 V at 1.5 A, within 30 W. Lost in HCM lists it for rental and sale in Vietnam.

Two ranges for low-power work
You choose Low or High with a front-panel button, then dial in the value. The low range gives more current, and the high range gives more voltage. At the maximums, the power works out to 24 W and 30 W.
What 30 W covers
A 30 W source handles sensor boards, small analog stages, microcontroller kits and similar loads. It will not drive a motor or a large amplifier. Therefore, add up the peak current of your device before you request the unit.
Why the Keysight E3640A power supply suits teaching benches
One knob, two range keys and a pair of terminals keep the learning curve short. Students see the set value on a clear numeric display, so they read results quickly. In addition, the single output keeps wiring simple, which reduces mistakes during the first lab sessions.
Quick selection guide for the Keysight E3640A power supply
- For up to 3 A at low voltage, use the 8 V range.
- Up to 20 V calls for the high range, with current at 1.5 A or less.
- More current or voltage means a larger model.
Handling tips
First, turn the output off before you change leads. Also keep the unit dry and ventilated, since small bench supplies still run warm. When the rental ends, return it in its original packing or a padded case.

Questions on the E3640A
What are the two ranges?
Low range: 8 V with up to 3 A. High range: 20 V with up to 1.5 A.
Can it power a small motor?
Only if the motor stays well within 30 W, so check the rating. Check its start-up current first, because that peak is often higher than the running current.
Is it a good first purchase for a training lab?
It can be. For a short course, a rental may cost less. Lost in HCM quotes either option.
